Sourton

Sourton Village is South West of Okehampton on the A386

As you travel along the A386 from Okehampton to Tavistock the tiny village of Sourton suddenly appears as the road snakes under the shadow of the high moor. Most people immediately notice the rather flamboyant Highwayman Inn, some will remark on the ancient 'OXO stone' stood sentinel beside the road but few spot the tiny church of St. Thomas a Becket nestled under the lofty Sourton Tors (height of 1,447 ft).

The church of St Thomas a Becket stands at the base of the moor. The tithe map of 1844 shows the 'High Road', known also as 'King's Way', running beyond the church along the moor edge, probably where the railway was later built.

The men working on the railroad bought their tankards of ale from the alehouse at Sourton Cross a few yards from the listed old farmhouse, which is now a public house named The Prewley Moor Arms. The old alehouse has long been demolished.

St Thomas a Becket's church is 14th to 16th century. It was built mainly of moor stone with three bells; now there are five.

In about 1870 spring water was tapped and left to freeze in stone tanks. These slabs of ice were transported to Plymouth by waggonette to be used in the fish trade. This business collapsed because the distance was far, and the ice melted in transit! Ruins of the old freezing store are still on Dartmoor.

Peat works also existed on Dartmoor and a tin streaming business, and there was tin mining at Rattlebrook. A tin mine still stands today.
