Okehampton

Okehampton on the North Western corner of Dartmoor off the A30

Okehampton is centrally placed in Devon, which makes it a good base if you wish to visit both North and the South coasts, or you fancy some delightful all over Devon touring.  Boasting the remains of a Norman Castle now managed by English Heritage, the town sports a modern indoor swimming pool with a fitness group, dance and exercise studio, sports hall, outdoor tennis courts in Simmons Park, riding stables close at hand, plenty of bike riding opportunities and the interesting Museum of Dartmoor Life is worth a family visit. Should the weather turn damp there's even a 2 screen cinema.

Okehampton holds a busy annual agricultural show, which in 2015 will be on Thursday 1413th of August with sheep, horses and cattle shows, vintage tractors, classic cars, miniature ponies, rabbits in hutches, even pigeons! Plus food hall, craft tent, trade stands, dog show and tug of war competions. A traditional farming community show.

Okehampton Carnival is held in October with a children's procession and a grand  evening procession.

The Victorian railway station is largely intact and well worth a visit. Travel on one of the trains on Saturday, Sunday and on Bank Holiday Mondays. The train journey down to Meldon Quarry from Okehampton Station is most enjoyable. Later on each year, just in time for Christmas, the town holds an Edwardian Evening with carol singing, Morris dancing and a chestnut roast.  The town has two golf courses a modern hospital, banks, 2 chemists, a good vet, several pubs, small shops +and 3 supermarkets, Waitrose, Lidl and a Co-op
