Mary Tavy village on the western slopes of Dartmoor between Okehampton and Tavistock.
Mary Tavy was once a thriving mining community in the 1800's, there is hardly any trace of Mary Tavy's mining industry of the 18th and 19th centuries except for the well preserved engine house which is adjacent to the A386 in the moorland valley as one approaches the village from a northerly direction. This is the site of lead/silver mine of Wheal Betsy, or, as it was also once named, Prince Arthur Consuls.
Access to great walking. The two most important features of this small community 4 miles North East of Tavistock are of course St. Mary's Church and the River Tavy. The church is truly magnificent. Give yourself an hour at least just to wander around the graveyard. The gravestones are wonderful, one amazing stone reads "Here Lieth the body of Mary Friend who departed this life 12th day of December 1787 Aged 78 years" !! I reckon this was a huge age for someone in those bygone days. Wouldn't I just love to show her this mention on the Internet today?
You will also be spoilt for choices on where to eat in Mary Tavy, the choices range from the Elephants Nest, The Mary Tavy Inn or the Royal Standard - all of which are in the parish of Mary Tavy

|The Elephants Nest||
A remote 16th century free house on the lower slopes of Dartmoor, the main bar has lots of beer pump clips on the beams, and the log burner provides a warm welcome. Two other rooms have an assortment of wooden dining chairs around a mix of tables, and throughout there are bare stone walls, flagstones, horsebrasses and three wood burning stoves. The pretty garden (with an area reserved for adults only) looks across dry-stone walls to pastures and rougher moorland above. Renowned for their food. Pubs

It is a place to meet, whether for a drink or to eat, in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. There are open log fires, thick stone walls and slate floors inside, and outside there is a large and recently extended garden which provides marvellous views of the moor.
Being located in as remote a place as it is, great emphasis is placed on good food, although the pretentious ‘gastro pub’ description will not be heard here!
