Lustleigh

Lustleigh on the east of the Moor within the beautiful Wray Valley.

Lustleigh is one of the prettiest villages on Dartmoor. It has THE most impressive May Day celebrations each year with village children parading through the village behind a local brass band, and finishing up in a local playing field for the traditional crowning of the May Queen, impressive maypole dancing, duck races, and Devon Cream teas. Gravestones underfoot in the church date back to 1600 and whilst there check out the beautiful stained glass windows. The village is my top selection for anyone seeking a traditionally English scene.  Click to read my food review of the charming Primrose Cottage cafe which sits in the heart of it all by the village green. Utterly charming.  The Cleave Inn is the only pub in the village. Click here to read my food review of the Cleave.

There are two sets of waterfalls at Canonteign today: the natural falls which have existed in this valley since time immemorial and the spectacular Lady Exmouth Falls, named after the 3rd Lady Exmouth and built under her direction in 1890.

An impressive feat of engineeering, the Lady Exmouth Falls were created by local miners under the direction of Lady Susan Exmouth after they had been made redundant following the closure of the estate's silver mines. The waterfalls are the highest manmade waterfalls in England, measuring some 70m; they provide one of the most breathtaking...
