Manaton - A quiet village on the north eastern side of Dartmoor.

Did you know that the author John Galsworthy stayed at Wingstone Farm in 1922 whilst writing The Forsythe Saga ? Many authors have used Dartmoor as the inspiration for their books, probably the most well know being Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, famous for his Hound of the Baskervilles murder story, and Agatha Christie, the 'Queen of Crime' who features Dartmoor in all 3 of her whodunnits, 'The Big Four', 'Dead Man's Folly' and 'The Sittaford Mystery'.

Several really attractive walks start from the Manaton area especially the walk around Lustleigh Cleave and  nearby Rippon Tor. Get hold of a good map and park at St. Winifred's Church car park. Long and short walks abound. Manaton to Lustleigh is a good leg stretch. With the Primrose tearooms or the Cleave Inn at Lustleigh as midway places to eat. There and back will take you about 3 to 4 hours. Hound Tor, Jay's Grave and Grimspound are all walkable but I must stress that a good map is the key to the best day out. Not only will you know where you are going, but you can recognise points of interest along the way, for instance the site of the Bronze Age settlement of 24 huts at Grimspound, which is acknowledged to be one of the outstanding bronze age sites in Britain.

If you walk to Widecombe you might enjoy, as I did, the Rugglestone Inn.

See  my review of Manaton's produce market, plus a food review of The Kestor Inn, and my walking page.
