The Old Stable is a recently renovated cottage in the grounds of the owners property, The Old Vicarage, in rural mid Devon, about a 25 minute drive from Dartmoor and offers two beautiful and individual apartments for 2 - 3 guests, one ground floor and one first floor apartment and Zingaro Wagon, which sits at the end of the garden of The Old Stable apartments in its own quiet private garden space.

Both the apartments and wagon are offered on a self catered basis or you can choose to stay on a bed and breakfast basis. We will bring your breakfast over into your apartment in the evening, so you can relax and enjoy breakfast at your leisure the following morning. Self catering or bed and breakfast, we aim to be as flexible as possible. You will find a supply of tea, coffee, hot chocolate and sugar and milk in the fridge to welcome your arrival along with some home baking. There are also essential herbs, spices and oil. Soap and shower wash are also provided.

The Hayloft is our first floor apartment within The Old Stable and sleeps 2 guests. The apartment is accessed via outside stairs so is not suitable for small children or anyone who has difficulty with steps. Children over the age of 10 years are welcome. The apartment is mainly open plan, with a high beamed ceiling; including the sleeping area and the living/eating area, with a separate small kitchenette and separate shower room at one end. The kitchen has lovely views over the countryside towards the village of Dolton. First floor terrace with seating.

The Shippon is the ground floor apartment in The Old Stable and sleeps 3 adults (or 2 adults and 2 children). Children over the age of 10 years are welcome. The front door is accessed over cobbles and there are two steps up to the door. The door opens into the main living area of the apartment. To the right is a well equipped kitchen kitchen. There is a sofa bed in the sitting area (which can be used for one adult or two children), and a dining table, which will seat four. Leading off to the right of the main living area is a separate double bedroom, with double bed. To the left of the main area is a shower room, separate toilet and utility area with washing machine and tumble dryer. Small garden in front of the property.

Zingaro Wagon is luxury glamping. Enter the wagon via some wooden steps and onto a small wooden balcony and through the large glass sliding doors.  The interior is open plan with the simple kitchen as you walk in.  There are plenty of shelves for food, with crockery and kitchen equipment for four guests and a microwave oven on one side and on the other a two ring gas hob, small fridge/freezer worktop and a kitchen sink. There is hot and cold running running water.  At the far end of the wagon is the living/sleeping area and wooden steps up to the double bed on the mezzanine area above the dining/sitting area. The sitting area below the bed has a table and side benches to sit 4 people, which will turn into another double bed if needed.  Here there is a small flat screen Freeview TV on the wall. The wagon has electricity and free WiFi. There is a wood burning stove with kindling and logs provided for the chillier months.  The whole wagon is insulated with wool, so it is beautifully cosy at all times.

There is shared use of The Greenhouse Spa, which offers a cedar hot tub and sauna for 2 guests and treatments from a visiting beautician can also be arranged.

Free WiFi. No pets in the apartments or wagon. No smoking. Central heating in both apartments for the chillier months. Towels and bed linen provided in both apartments and the wagon. Parking adjacent to the Old Stable.

What's nearby?:
Dowland is a small hamlet set in beautiful, unspoilt Devon countryside, looking south towards the northern end of Dartmoor; a perfect venue for a relaxing break or for exploring nearby villages, Dartmoor, Exmoor, RHS Rosemoor and the coastlines of Devon and Cornwall. The Old Stable is situated on the Tarka Trail, a 180 mile long trail that follows in the footsteps of the character Tarka the Otter from Henry Williamson’s famous novel. The Trail splits into 2 loops and we are situated on the South Loop. Also nearby are three Devon Wildlife Reserves, Halsdon, Meeth Quarry, and Ash Moor, which offer some spectacular woodland, river and meadow walks. The area is a walkers paradise. Halsdon Wood offers a walk which takes you to sites which inspired some of James Ravilious' best-known photographs. James Ravilious took more than seventy thousand images before his death in 1999 and these can be seen at the Beaford Arts archive, a short drive away at Beaford. The Royal Photographic Society called his work “a unique body of work, unparalleled at least in this country for its scale and quality”. Although the setting is rural and quiet we can offer some wonderful places to eat and visit. Dolton, a mile away to the north, has a small supermarket and post office, butchers and two good pubs, The Rams Head and The Royal Oak. A mile to the south you can find The Duke of York in Iddesleigh, home to Michael Morpurgo's War Horse Valley, another great pub serving good food and company. Mid Devon is a quiet, peaceful and very unspoilt part of the country, where you can wander along the narrow Devon lanes and glimpse rural views through gateways. An area not yet commercialised or teeming with visitors and traffic, a reminder of ages past and a slower less stressful way of life.
