400 yards from the pub in Manaton, in the peaceful hamlet of Water, a beautiful cottage converted from a hayloft above granite stables (horses/sheep occasionally) beyond the owners’ ancient farmhouse. Enclosed courtyard (table/chairs) immediately to the side and, beyond the owners’ walled garden, your own enclosed private garden (picnic bench). You are welcome to wander the 9 acres of gardens, pond (unfenced) and fields (sheep, horses, chickens). A picturesque ½ mile walk leads through woodland to Lustleigh Cleave and the River Bovey.
From parking area, 60 yards of gravel path and 3 steps to front door. Big tiled hall (space for walking gear). Stairs (top stairgate) up to wonderful open-plan living/dining/kitchen with spectacular views from big roof windows across fields to Black Hill, hand-built kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, larder fridge, electric cooker) with large table/benches/stools at one end and, at the other, woodburner, TV/DVD/Blu-ray and leather sofas. Two steps up to hallway and two double bedrooms (limited clothes-hanging space), one with 5' bed and each with smart en suite shower-room (suite). Beyond the living area, another double bedroom with en suite bathroom (suite plus hand-shower). Exterior utility room (washing machine, tumble drier, freezer). Stabling available, by arrangement. A beautiful, relaxed place to stay at any time of year with woodland and moorland walks from the door.
A peaceful and beautifully presented hay loft conversion on Dartmoor (even to the smell of hay and occasionally hearing the horse moving around in the stable below), approximately 30 minutes from Exeter. Very well equipped and kept at a constant temperature by the ground source heat pump. Astrid and her family made us feel very welcome and had good tips for walks around the local area. Close to the local pub where we had an excellent Sunday lunch carvery. Plenty of walks directly from the property onto the moor and for cyclists, challenging but enjoyable cycling. We were there for just a long weekend but will definitely be back for a week's stay in the future.
