Dartmoor is on the doorstep. The Two Moors Way runs along the top of Hameldown to Grimspound bronze age village and Hookney Tor. Walk over the top of Hameldown to Widecombe (3 miles by road; 2 pubs, 2 cafes, church, National Trust shop, post office, gift shops).
A granite porch opens into a book-lined hall, the original cross passage. To one side of the hall is the kitchen with Aga and farmhouse table. To the other side of the hall two steps lead down into the former shippen or animal barn, now a triple-aspect living room with three south-facing windows, wood burner, TV and DVD player, piano, bookshelves, and a door to the main staircase. Beyond the kitchen is a secondary staircase and a smaller sitting room.
Upstairs, there are five bedrooms (two with double and single beds, one twin ensuite, one with bunk beds, one with a single bed and second pull-out single). There are extra beds on the landing (futon) and in the small sitting room (sofabed).
The refurbished 600 year old barn was originally a longhouse before being used as a barn, this is now a beautiful oak floored space approx. 45ft by 17ft, with an outside toilet and shower in a separate heated building. It can be rented with the house for events, special meals, courses, mini conferences, classes, band practice (it has a wonderful acoustic) etc. Rates by negotiation depending on intended use.
The barn is on three levels, with one step between each. The main area i25ft by 17ft) is now a great space for dance, exercise, meditation or can be set up with tables and chairs. The central section has glazed doors at either side. The top section has a small kitchen corner. Folding tables and chairs for indoor or outdoor use are stored under cover in the nearby open-fronted BBQ barn.
