The place:

North Bovey: postcard-pretty village (good food pub, medieval church) with tree-shaded green in the beautiful wooded valley of the mini river Bovey, two lane-miles from the spectacular open moor around Manaton or Moretonhampstead. Bovey Castle (hotel, good restaurant, golf), about 2 miles.

The property:

... 2 miles from North Bovey in a lovely setting is Bovey Castle, built in 1907 as a country seat for the heir to the WH Smith empire and now a renowned hotel. Carefully hidden in the grounds are 22 private, granite-built lodges of which we offer 8. These smart, stylish, comfy properties overlook the Edwardian gardens, lake and tennis courts; parking is a 5 minute walk from the lodges (unloading/loading closer). All the hotel facilities are yours to enjoy, including indoor heated swimming pool (65’ x 19'6" x 4'6" deep; no children before 9.30am or after 5.30pm), gym, steam room, sauna, spa (beauty treatments) and restaurant. Outside are hard and grass tennis courts (lessons available), croquet lawn (seasonal) and trampoline.

Supervised playroom for children under 8 (extra, available school holidays and half-terms) with arts and crafts, egg collecting and ferrets. Eight to 14 year olds can join the Bovey Rangers (school holidays only, extra) and enjoy activities ranging from rock climbing to survival skills. Optional activities for adults include archery, rifle shooting, fly fishing, falconry (daily display), riding, clay pigeon shooting and cider and sloe gin making. Mountain bikes for hire. Wrapped around the hotel and lodges is a championship 18 hole golf course with driving range and pro shop; complimentary round (subject to availability, non-transferable) for all guests over 16. If you’d rather something a little quieter, roam the 400 acre estate (wellies provided). If you don’t feel like cooking, order a restaurant meal or pizza to be delivered to your lodge, or, for a special occasion, book a table at the hotel’s restaurant. The friendly hotel staff will help you arrange any activities you wish.  An exceptional place to stay. Wedding licence. Maid service available (extra). Spring water. Arrival after 4pm.

Hay Tor is semi-detached. Open-plan living/dining/kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, freezer, larder fridge). Living area (TV/DVD) with big stone central fireplace (‘living flame’ gas fire) and two pairs of French windows to wrap-around balcony (tables/chairs). Large dining area with glass table. Stairs down to half-landing with loo; more stairs down to utility room (washer-drier, sink) and two bedrooms – a double (6' zip-linked bed or twin) with en suite shower-room (suite), the other a double (6' zip-linked bed or twin) with en suite bathroom (suite, shower over bath). From the living room, open tread stairs up to the master double (6’ bed) with en suite bathroom (suite, shower over bath) with lovely views.

Please note:    2 night short breaks are not available at this property.

There is a TV in the master bedroom.

The following dates in 2015 have restricted use of the hotel facilities (the restaurant, bar and lounge areas are unavailable): From 12 noon on the 25th September to 12 noon the 27th September. From 12 noon on the 2nd October to 12 noon on the 4th October. From 12 noon on the 14th October to 12 noon on the 16th October. The bistro, pool, spa and golf are still available as usual.

Following recent refurbishment Bovey Castle offers two renamed and rebranded restaurants. The first is ‘The Great Western Restaurant' offering exclusive dining. The second is the ‘Smith’s Brasserie', a gastro pub serving an array of classic British courses.
