Castle Drogo is situated high above the Teign Gorge. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens for self-made millionaire Julius Drewe. It looks ancient, but this remarkable building was only constructed 100 years ago, the last castle ever built in England. From the beginning it has suffered from water penetration and is now undergoing a 5 year conservation project that will last until 2017 to make it watertight.
We're staying open during the conservation work, giving you the opportunity to go behind the scenes. Inside the castle has been redisplayed by three artists, you will see elements of the collection brought together in creative ways, and darkened spaces brought to life revealing new aspects of Drogo's remarkable story.
You’ll also be able to see the building work in progress from the viewing tower (restrictions apply), and get closer than ever before to our precious treasures, now displayed in new ways.
Discover the beautiful Lutyens-designed terraced garden with dramatic views of Dartmoor. There’s plenty to see from the rose garden to the quaint Bunty House (Wendy House) complete with its own miniature garden.
Below the castle you can follow the winding paths into the sheltered Teign Valley. Explore this ancient gorge, teeming with wildlife as you follow the trails along the river.
Recharge at the café with a traditional Devon cream tea or tuck into a slice of cake. At our gift shop and plant centre you can pick up a wide range of plants, books, cards and locally produced food.
