Lydgate House is perfectly situated to enjoy all that Dartmoor has to offer. A stroll down the pretty lane from Lydgate House brings our guests to the small but beautiful village of Postbridge with its famous Clapper Bridge that straddles the East Dart River. This is the very heart of Dartmoor with its sunning scenery and ancient history, this is the place to free the mind of the stresses of modern day life. Stroll, Ramble, Hike, Bike, Bird Watch, Fish, see the Dartmoor Ponies, ride a horse over the moors, Climb a Tor, you choose and we’ll organize it for you.
The House & Grounds
With an atmosphere more like a country house than a hotel, Lydgate House is perfect for those looking for a relaxed environment surrounded by glorious countryside. The guests’ lounge, which also houses the small bar, has a log burning stove and beautiful views across the valley. Bookshelves and tables abound with novels, magazines and books on Dartmoor and many other subjects. A small snug leads to the conservatory dining room, again with spectacular views. The terrace and gardens overlook the valley and lead directly onto the moor.
Within the 36 acres of Lydgate House there is a Hay Meadow containing several rare species of plants including orchids. The river running through the grounds attracts a variety of birds from Buzzards and Herons to Swallows and House Martins who make their home here.
The seven en-suite rooms are individually furnished and decorated. There are many personal touches to make you feel at home as well as the usual facilities of tea/coffee tray, hairdryer, remote control TV and radio-alarm clock. Duvets and top pillows are filled with luxurious Siberian goose down. All bedrooms, named after Dartmoor birds, are on the first floor except for Dipper, our only ground floor room. Wi-Fi available in all rooms.
For those rooms on the first floor with en-suite shower rooms there is an additional and separate bathroom where guests may soak in a bath if they choose. Towelling bathrobes are available.
