Mill End has a special place in my heart. Long before we moved to Devon we stayed at the hotel and as I watched the river from our room I spotted an angler on the other bank.
Rushing down the stairs I had a snatched conversation across the river about the usual stuff, how the fishing was going and if he had any luck or not. I was asked if I was fishing and I laughed. I didn’t have any gear on this trip but the hotel had in its rod room some waders and a rod and line but no flies.
I wished him good luck and left. That evening when we walked down to dinner I was told something had been left for me in reception. It was some flies that the friendly angler had left for me.
With those flies I managed to catch my first Teign trout. Fast forward some 20 years and now Mill End Hotel is in the hands of Nick and Tara Culverhouse who I have had the privilege to work with at the Fox and Hounds for the last 7 years.
I was thrilled when they asked if we would like to open a branch of our fishing school there and without any hesitation said a resounding yes!
Mill End is a perfect destination for the traveling angler. The Teign passes through the hotel grounds and the hotel has a section that residents can easily fish. They can add to their fishing by buying a permit to the Upper Teign Fishing Association water that is close by too.
One of the great added attractions is that Mill End is perfectly situated for fishing on Dartmoor, one of the must-fish destinations for any angler. There are many miles of water to explore for beautiful, free rising trout. They are fast but if you are too you will have a memorable time.
Our fishing school has already welcomed new anglers to Mill End who have caught their first trout on the Teign and have now gone on to take up fly fishing.
I now walk around the same rod room and smile. It feels like I have come full circle.
