Today is the hottest day of the year so far, a toasty 24 degrees which has got me thinking about summer holidays. Have you got your summer holiday booked yet? If the answer is no, never fear I recently visited the perfect cottage for a great family and dog friendly holiday on Dartmoor – Kirkside Barn.
Kirkside Barn is a 3 bedroom property that can sleep up to eight people and a baby and is located right in the heart of Mary Tavy on the western fringes of Dartmoor National Park.
Living in Mary Tavy myself I know the owners, Steve and Adey very well and they have made Kirkside Barn a very welcoming holiday cottage. The location is ideal, they are right in the centre of the village, next to the picturesque church, so the neighbours won’t bother you. If you like the idea of self-catering but aren’t a fan of cooking you are walking distance to three good pubs – The Mary Tavy Inn, The Peter Tavy Inn and The Elephants Nest and the village also has a great local shop/Post Office.
A warm welcome awaits as soon as you arrive, even the four legged members of your family aren’t forgotten as there is a Bonio for them to enjoy.
The Barn has three bedrooms, a large sitting room with ample seating, large kitchen diner and two bathrooms.
Plenty of seating for all the family and the large sofa is a sofa bed with an everyday use mattress. The lounge has a patio door at the end from where the photo has been taken which opens out onto a sunken patio – alfresco breakfast anyone?
The real hidden advantage of Kirkside is that it has two separate staircases. Why I hear you say is that an advantage? This makes it the ideal property for family groups of different generations or two families or groups of friends holidaying together as the two first floor areas are not linked so each family/group have their own privacy.
From the stairs in the lounge area you go up to a double bedroom and family bathroom.
This is the spacious double bedroom, everything was presented immaculately and no sign of a speck of dust or cobweb anywhere!
The main family bathroom offers a full size bath with shower over. All linen and towels are included in the weekly rental prices.
Heading back downstairs and back through the lounge you enter into a very well equipped kitchen dining area so if you are cooking in you will find everything you need. There is also a full size fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, iron and ironing board.
Off the kitchen is the second staircase that leads up to the further double bedroom and another bathroom and a twin room the kids will love!
This bedroom can either be set up as a double or a twin, and as you can see is also large enough to house a full size cot. Cot provided upon request. Steve and Adey can also provide stairgates and high chairs at no extra cost.
The twin room is ideal for kids and has a bed built over the stairs – great for making camps under!
The small bathroom in this ‘wing’ of the Barn has been built into the eaves of the building and has a studio bath with hand held shower and a very unusual corner toilet. Great for the kids.
The Barn is situated next door to the owner’s property and is approached by a granite cobbled pathway from the drive which has off road parking for two cars.
All in all Kirkside Barn is a perfect place to stay to switch off from everything, relax and enjoy the Dartmoor scenery.
