After a enjoying good night’s sleep you can sit back and relax in the light & airy sun filled dining room with wonderful views over Dartmoor to enjoy one of their award winning breakfasts. Breakfast’s at ‘Overcombe House’ are delicious and can only be described as a special treat; David and John believe in serving fresh food using the best ingredients; that is why your cooked breakfast is always prepared fresh to order & served to your table.
To start you can help yourself to their tempting buffet; choices include squeezed fruit juices, a range of cereals, seasonal fresh fruit medley (May to September), citrus mix & yogurts. After you have chosen what you would like from the buffet and perused the menu they will then take your breakfast order. Whilst they prepare your freshly cooked breakfast you can enjoy the views of Dartmoor & the antics of the many varieties of bird that visit the feeders in the garden.
The cooked breakfast options range from the more traditional to lighter fish & vegetarian choices; the emphasis is always on LOCAL, HOMEMADE, ORGANIC & FAIRTRADE produce. The Cornish back bacon is dry cured and then oak smoked using traditional methods & their artisan sausages are handmade, all meat that we serve comes from the local butcher, Bidders at Yelverton. As you would expect the eggs are free range and come from a farm near Cotehele just on the far side of the river Tamar.
The origins of 'Overcombe House' date from the 1890's, since then it has undergone many alterations & renovations. 'Overcombe House' is not a modern soulless purpose built hotel there is no lift & it has many quirks that you would expect in an older property. Whenever they carry out any alterations or renovations thry try to do it sympathetically taking into account the age & location of the property.
To ensure that both your requirements & comforts are satisfied 'Overcombe House' is personally run by resident proprietors David and John. David & John offer quality facilities with a personal service tailored as much as possible to your needs while maintaining a relaxed, cosy & informal atmosphere. You can be assured of receiving a warm welcome with complimentary refreshments on arrival; you can choose one of our quality teas or our sumptuous and aromatic coffee.
David and John are both lucky & delighted to live in the natural environment that is Dartmoor National Park. It is rather difficult not to be consumed by the nature that is literally everywhere, taking this into account they follow R.S.P.B. guide-lines on creating a wildlife friendly garden.
They started our wild life garden in 2010, the lawn is not neatly cropped & fertilised as this is not good for birds or mammals etc., they trim the lawn short at the beginning of the season then from May onwards they only trim the centre leaving the edges & sloping bank to to grow long and tall. The short grass area is ideal for birds to feed and the long grass areas provides seeds & habitat for insects and their larvae but also crucially cover slow worms and other mammals. One really surprising but delightful & unexpected result is the selection of wild flowers and clovers we now get every year that neither David or John have seen since we walked through wild meadows in their youth. Then in September we rake off any hay but leave the long grass until the following March/April and then the cycle begins again.
By taking the garden down this route they have seen many visitors to the garden some are plentiful but others are rare & or endangered. They have foxes, hedgehogs, pygmy shrews, bank voles and over 25 different varieties of bird that they can identify paying us a visit including great spotted woodpecker, sparrow hawk & song thrush's to name a few. Our garden is not exclusively for wild life, humans are welcome to sit back on our terrace and enjoy the view and the antics of the varied visitors to our garden.
